Unified CommunicationsUnified Communications is the ‘next generation’ of business telephony and has been developed to provide feature-rich, reliable and easy to use telephony services for office, mobile and home workers. Various definitions of Unified Communications exist but in essence the goal is to ensure that people can be easily contacted in a manner that is convenient to all parties. In practice this means that a person may be contacted on a landline or mobile telephone, receive a voicemail that can be retrieved from a telephone or as an attachment on an email, may indicate their availability via ‘presence’ indicators on a shared application or engage in online, real time chat, text, audio or video. The benefit is that people can be contacted irrespective of their location and the calling party only needs to call one number which follows that individual and is routed to whichever device is most convenient e.g. landline, mobile phone or computer. An additional benefit of Unified Communications is that is uses Internet Protocol (IP) for voice communications, the same protocol that is used for the vast majority of data communications today. This means that voice and data share the same cabling and equipment infrastructure, reducing complexity and ultimately reducing cost. It also means that voice and data services can be more closely integrated enabling innovative applications such as screen ‘pop ups’ and call history to be made available to individuals handing calls which can dramatically improve customer interaction and improve levels of customer service |
