…pay the ransom fee and risk losing their files. 15% said they would pay and take the chance that they may not ever get their files back.
On May 12, 2017, a ransomware attack known as Wannacry spread rapidly across the globe.
When Wannacry touches a users computer, it encrypts all its files, effectively locking them and making them unavailable to the victim. A Bitcoin ransom is demanded in exchange for restoring access to the files. The price for unlocking the data and hardware increases with time. If payment isn’t made by the deadline, the computer is rendered permanently inaccessible.
This isn’t the first attack and won’t be the last to affect organisations of all types across the world.
