Most businesses will be backing up their company data to an external hard drive, tape or via an automated off-site backup.

But how confident are you that this backup will do it's job when you need it most?

The reason for raising this point is following security-audits on a number of new customers that have chosen to use Qubix Technology to maintain and support their IT systems.

We discovered that the clients previous IT support providers had implemented backup procedures using BackupExec and configured the backup so that in the event of data needing to be restored - it was extremely likely that the client would encounter data loss.

The reason for this was due to the systems being configured to undertake a full backup on a weekly basis to an external hard drive, with incremental backups being taken on a daily basis.

The client would only have a full back-up available that was up to seven days old and meant that the incremental backup would only backup files that had changed on a daily basis.

In the event of a file being deleted that had not changed since the last full backup, the scheduled incremental backup would not have a copy of this file and if this deletion was not recognised before the next full backup, the file would be deleted forever!

We quickly identified this security threat and made changes to ensure that the customer was properly protected.

The client was delighted that they were now protected, but also concerned that their previous IT support provider had exposed them to such a risk.
